Team Description:
The Robo Knights team consists of 5 members. We attend Central Academy Middle School, located in Fincastle, VA. Our team sets high goals and works very hard to accomplish them. We often work in pairs and divide tasks among members. We made prototypes of our Knight Grip, and tested many materials to create the best design. Our team remained excited and kept a positive attitude throughout the months of hard work. Our team never gave up, and this determination allowed our team to accomplish our goals. As a team we have learned that working together is the most important way to accomplish our goals, and we loved working with our senior partner, Mr. Hix. We also worked with members of the community: Altec, Advance Auto, Lowes, Home Instead, The Glebe Assisted Living, BTEC, Gala Industries, Troutman Sanders LLP, and others. Our team continues to work well together, and we’re very excited as we anticipate what we will learn from others during the FLL Global Innovations experience.

Brief Submission Description:
The Knight Grip is an adaptable grip that meets the needs of individuals who have rheumatoid arthritis or trouble gripping small utensils and hand tools. The grip is comprised of four distinct layers. The main layer is a hinged tube structure made of light-weight durable plastic. The plastic tubing is coated in a layer of non-conductive material to protect the user from electric shock when using the tool. This coating also offers customized color options for marketing purposes. Inside the tubing is a third layer, comprised of removable adhesive foam strips that hold the tool in place. The foam strips come in a variety of thicknesses to grip a variety of tool handle sizes. The outside cover layer is made of a thermal plastic grip that will conform to the user’s unique hand grip, providing the leverage needed to use the selected tools. All layers are held in place by adhesive strips that wrap around the device in two locations, preventing the tool from slipping out during use.
