We are The Lost Generation, a rookie team located in rural Orange Virginia. We are a strong team of 9 (8 boys + 1 girl) in Division 1 FLL. Some fun facts about us: 1. We have 1 set of twins 2. Cousins 3. Another set of siblings (9 years old and 11 years old) 4. We had overnight (all night) engineering parties 5. Our team name was created to remember our seniors and the issues they face We formed in February 2012 and immediately started working on game changers to assist our community with focus on seniors. Our research on our innovative idea included community outreach, physical therapists and extensive information gathering. Our team focused on innovation that would not only assist our elderly but help handicap or individuals who need temporary assistance while recovering. Our team invention came from merging several good ideas from all our team members. Significant trade-offs, theories and experimentation led to our solution that will help millions around the world.
Brief Submission Description:
The Follow Mii Bot was designed to follow seniors, or individuals in need, to provide lifting and carrying assistance. Our product is able to assist seniors with everyday tasks such as carrying groceries, taking dinner to the table, lifting items from the floor to a counter top and many other things we take for granted. The prototype contains a watch or necklace for voice commands, automatic docking, pedometer and auto-detection of a fall. It has an initial height of 18 inches and can lift items up to 5 feet high. Our seniors often attempt to carry items while using walkers or canes. Too many injuries occur and as a result we often restrict a person to a Rascal or fully operational robot. This can lead to mobility degradation due to complete dependence on these new devices. We provide assistance while maintaining current mobility. It is the first level of help for someone who is able to move independently but not able to carry items.
